Pia, Great feedback and thanks for taking the time to pull my points apart. You made some good counter points. I'm not sure I share your confidence in the big vendors and SI companies supporting O/S - I'm still very dubious of Oracle's pending acq...

I've been thinking about this a bit more lately, and I believe that it is not only software that could benefit from the open source philosophy. I read an article recently about Open Collaborative Design, which is about applying the open source con...

Wayne, interesting thought and one that inspired me to kick around some ideas and blog about the possibilities as we've moved into the Open Source world quite heavily over the past two years (we abandoned a number of proprietary vendor partnership...

Interesting idea! But are there no open source projects already in existence that perform those functions? What do you think of the govdex experiment with confluence btw?

Darron, Wayne, Great idea! A cooperative approach sounds like a great way to go. There's plenty of scope for the Gov 2.0 site to meet the needs of the Local Government community. As far as seeding this site with content, I'd welcome any regular ...

Wayne, Darren I have just been invited to join a Southern Councils (of NSW) group to cover financial and asset management planning - a big issue for us all. The current chair of this group sits in Eurobodalla (Southern NSW). I will introduce this ...

Hi Darron, Darren. Getting people involved takes a lot of effort. I sent an e-mail to every Council in Australia about the LGAM site. We are averaging about 25 visitors a day at the moment, but I'm not getting as many conributions as I'd like. I ...

Hey Wayne I see you are set up here also. I have been registered on this site for months. I have a discussion going on Community Engagement. It is not gettin a lot of hits but it is the most "commented" entry on this site. There has obviously been...

Just read a story on Slashdot about the City of Vancouver recently adopting open standards: http://news.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/05/24/1851226&from=rss "Vancouver, Canada's third-largest city, has adopted a policy of 'open standards, inter...

It seems to me, that if even a fraction of the money currently being spent by Councils and other levels of Government on proprietary software systems was channeled into developing an open source software suite for Government, it could result in hu...

Hi Wayne,

Citizen Innovation is an area that I'm really passionate about and is sometimes also referred to as 'crowdsourcing' and 'user-led innovation'.

In the Gov 2.0 context 'citizen innovation' is about leveraging the expertise, creativity and knowledge of the people who actually 'use' the services, policy and legislation developed by the public sector.

So citizen innovation develops pathways for people to 'co-create' the government services (ie. healthcare, education, social services etc.); policy frameworks and potentially even the legislation that impacts virtually every aspect of our lives.

I'll add this clarification to the group page.

Hi Wayne,

A very interesting site indeed! I'm going to cast my eyes over and will provide some guidance on who to followup with at the City of Melbourne.
